I’m think it’s cool when people really know their junk about music and can play an instrument really well. Case in point is my friend Daniel Miles who plays every instrument under the sun and he’s really awesome. However, I’m not really writing to talk about my friends and their musical ability but a musical re-discovery of sorts that I made this past week. To me, music is simply something that either moves me or it doesn’t. I don’t have the aptitude to break down a song and critique it based upon tone or harmonic techniques and I can’t tell the difference between a good musician and a great one. I like Billy Joel and Eric Clapton. I can’t tell you why Joel is a great pianist and Clapton is a great guitar player but I just like the way they sound. So there!
So my musical re-discovery of sorts concerns a stellar band that I haven’t listened to since high school. Some bands have a truly unique sound and Cake is that for me. I love the horns, piano, guitar etc… I think some of the lyrics are really clever and some, well, maybe most, don’t make any sense at all. So presently, I’m rockin out to stickshifts and safetybelts, never there and the distance. Yeah! It makes me the kinda happy that if I was out running I would run 5 miles really fast.
