Gospel-Centered Part 1

I am part of a team of church planters that is headed to Denver to start a church in 2011.  Our core group of eight has been gathering weekly to discuss what we see as foundational in the Scripture regarding ecclesiology.  Last week we went through what it meant to be gospel-centered or gospel-driven.  Not only that but I have the privilege of being a member of the community of faith we call Summit Church.  We as a church love the gospel and preach it corporately when we meet and individually on a daily basis.  These two things have really begun to make me critically walk through what it means biblically to be a gospel-centered church.

Paul wrote to the church in Corinthians that “I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures”  There is so much to potentially unpack here.  I’ll start with the idea of the Scriptures.  To be gospel-centered is to be Word-centered.  Those who are Christian believe that God has revealed himself.  More specifically, those who are Christian believe that God has specifically spoken through prophets and apostles inspired by the Holy Spirit who wrote down what we call the Bible.  Obviously, these are very loaded terms and ideas that many over the years of Christian history have written in more detail than what I am attempting to do here.

I am not attempting to provide a defense of the full canon of Scripture or its inerrancy(both of which I hold to) but to see Biblical revelation as tied directly to being a gospel-centered church.  If we look back at Corinthians, Paul gives a summary statement of the Gospel.  It is the promised and fulfilled work of Jesus Christ on the cross for the remission of our sins.  This work of the Son of God is not found in the beauty of a sunset or a tree, nor is it found in philosophy.  Man, in his own intellect, could not glean a correct understanding of God and when he attempts to do so, only creates systems and images that are eerily similar to himself and his way of thinking.

In Luke 24, Jesus basically takes two men and illuminates how his work is only understood in light of the Scripture.  If we want to be gospel centered then we better know the Word, for it is about the work of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  I’ll quote it here.

“While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.  But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.  And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad.  One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?  “And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.  “But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.  “But also some women among us amazed us.  When they were at the tomb early in the morning, and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.”Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.”And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!”Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.”

To sum this passage up, the Scriptures are consistently and coherently pointing to the work of the Son.  From the prophets to the apostles, the entire corpus of Scripture is about God’s glorious work of salvation.  If we are to be a gospel-centered church in Denver, then my prayer is that we would hold fast to the Scripture.  The glory of the Father is seen there in the work of the Son through the power and movement of the Spirit.  If we want to see the nations discipled in the gospel then we would do well to hold fast to the very words of God for in it we know the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation.

I’m think it’s cool when people really know their junk about music and can play an instrument really well.  Case in point is my friend Daniel Miles who plays every instrument under the sun and he’s really awesome.  However, I’m not really writing to talk about my friends and their musical ability but a musical re-discovery of sorts that I made this past week.  To me, music is simply something that either moves me or it doesn’t.  I don’t have the aptitude to break down a song and critique it based upon tone or harmonic techniques and I can’t tell the difference between a good musician and a great one.  I like Billy Joel and Eric Clapton.  I can’t tell you why Joel is a great pianist and Clapton is a great guitar player but I just like the way they sound.  So there!

So my musical re-discovery of sorts concerns a stellar band that I haven’t listened to since high school.  Some bands have a truly unique sound and Cake is that for me.  I  love the horns, piano, guitar etc…  I think some of the lyrics are really clever and some, well, maybe most, don’t make any sense at all.  So presently, I’m rockin out to stickshifts and safetybelts, never there and the distance.  Yeah! It makes me the kinda happy that if I was out running I would run 5 miles really fast.

Vacancy

I got the itch again to blog and the itch to not study Hebrew any more tonight so after about a three month hiatus I should be pregnant with many months worth of blogging materiel.  Well, here goes…

So a couple of weeks ago I was thinking about Jesus and the gospel and the lost and broken world that we live in.  I feel like there’s an internal struggle within my own heart and even an attitude within the church that looks like this in regards to the church and the “gospel” we proclaim.

no vacancy

I’m attracted to beauty, strength, talent and intellect.  I like it when people are clean and pretty.  I like it when people are well put together and they don’t come with a lot of problems and baggage.  The family of God is so much easier to love when they act and look lovable.  However, truth be told, I am none of those things.  I am just as broken(probably more so) as the next person and the further I progress in Christ the further this truth about myself is revealed to me.  So, if the aforementioned things were requirements for salvation then I just failed miserably.  See, it’s a funny thing, the Gospel.  There’s room at the cross and we plead with those outside to come join us, because the cross is for the CEO and the unemployed, the homeless and the single mom, the seminary student and porn addict, the divorced and the sexual chaste and the prostitute, the self righteous and the self loathing. There’s room at the cross and all are welcome.  How can we look down on those outside of it?  Have we forgotten who we are and where we came from?  We’re in his story because he called us.  We’re speaking his name and giving our lives to him because he spoke life into this grave.  Come to the cross!  There’s room and we welcome you to kneel to the one who has saved us!

Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love and power.

I will arise and go to Jesus,
He will embrace me in His arms;
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O there are ten thousand charms.

Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,
God’s free bounty glorify;
True belief and true repentance,
Every grace that brings you nigh.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Lost and ruined by the fall;
If you tarry till you’re better,
You will never come at all.

I think Christians love morality and confuse it for the Gospel.  I think we give morality a share on the throne of our hearts as if Jesus is pleased to parcel out his kingship to another.  Morality, if it stands alone or is made primary in life becomes antithetical to the Gospel.  In order to even make statements like this it’s necessary to have an understanding of these categories.  I’ll go with Webster’s definition of morality.

1.  conformity to the rules of right conduct; moral or virtuous conduct

2.  moral quality or character

3. virtue in sexual matters, chastity

4. a doctrine or system of morals

Morality is not hard to understand.  It’s natural for us to comprehend.  We love making statements like “Be good not bad” and “Do right not wrong” as if Jesus and the Holy Spirit are in heaven doing cartwheels because they are so impressed with how we are living.  However, our conformity to “right” conduct is much more deceptive in that we tell each other that God is impressed when we abstain from alcohol, fornication, adultery, pornography, “non-christian” music, swear words, clubs, lying, cheating, short skirts, bikinis, fighting, gossip and greed.  Our conformity becomes even more deceptive in that some of these things aforementioned are clearly commanded against in Scripture and some are just beasts of our own creation.  The lie we believe in regards to this system of right and wrong is that God is primarily after right action.  One point for God and the Christian team if we burn our Coldplay cd’s, say darn instead of damn, boycott Disney and the homosexuals and avoid mixing with the tramps, broken and lost unless handing out a tract or doing a survey asking what they think about God.  RIDICULOUS!!!

Now I do think the Scriptures speak to virtue and I do think that there is a obvious call on the Christian’s life to obedience, but through the Gospel it works itself out in a very radical and divine way.  Only God would think of something like this and only his Gospel brings about this kind of beauty.  I used the word “primary” a couple of times when dealing with the moral code above and I think within that word lies a correct understanding of Gospel centered obedience.  I think the Scripture states that Jesus is not primarily concerned with outward action and the Gospel is not primarily about correcting bad living.  Over and over again in the gospels Jesus makes it painfully clear that right action without the right heart is detestable to God.  Matt Chandler, when preaching through Luke 14, stated that Jesus is relentlessly after our hearts.  If the heart is wicked then everything else will be twisted and warped even if it is a Scriptural ideal; however if Jesus has the heart, our lives will be worshipful towards him in joy.  Living hearts filled with and empowered by the Holy Spirit live rightly before God as we walk by faith in a person and not a system of morals!  BEAUTIFUL!!!

Couch Surfing

So my roommate Andy is going to travel out west for thirty days by motorcycle and he discovered a website called couchsurfers.com.  It’s a community of world wide travelers who open their homes/couches to those who need a place to crash for the night.  Their tag line is “participating in creating a better world one couch at a time” and we thought, hey, that would be a really cool thing to do, so we created a profile and opened up our home.  Maybe we’ll get to meet some really cool people….or maybe we might have bums stay with us and all my stuff will be stolen when I get home from work…either way, it’ll be exciting!  Hopefully we’ll get our first group of travelers soon and I’ll update the post on our experience.

Rocks and Such

I love to climb and this weekend me and some friends went to Moores wall outside of Winston Salem.  Bright sun and just warm enough– couldn’t ask for a better day.  There’s a lot of freedom for me in climbing.  Just somethin about being up there on a face where you can look down and see the birds flying above the tree tops.  When I calm my mind and look around (cause I often get tense when 100 plus feet off the ground), I get a sense of peace and tranquility that is often blurred beacause of schedules to keep and work to do.  Rocks are just a reminder to me that Jesus is my peace and rest in the midst of a broken and screwed up world.   My ultimate peace isn’t found in an experience that I have to keep going back to but a person who I am united to and walk in communion with daily.

The Easter Miracle

This coming Sunday Christians around the world will gather for corporate worship to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.   However, I want to recognize a more ridiculous Easter tradition.  Here’s to the peep.  Some love ‘em and some hate ‘em.  I personally align myself with the latter.  Here are your peeps fast facts.

It takes 6 minutes to make one Peeps Chick

Original Peeps have a shelf life of 2 years

More than 5 Million Peeps are produced EACH DAY

Peeps have been the most popular Non-Chocolate Easter candy in the United States for more than a decade

Yellow is America’s best selling color

Peeps have ZERO fat grams and are Gluten and Nut Free

Peeps lost their wings in 1999

A Peep-eating contest has taken place annually in Sacramento, Calif., since 1997. It occurs after Easter so participants can clear store shelves of unsold stock. The current record for the number of Peeps consumed in 30 minutes is 88 by Dennis Gross of Sacramento.

Happy Easter

Somedays while I paint I listen to books on cd, others its just music and others I’ll listen to guys like Matt Chandler, Mark Driscoll, Ravi Zacharias etc…  Today was a podcasting day and I heard Ravi qoute a British journalist by the name of Steve Turner.  Sarcastic and to the point, I thought this was an interesting take on the inconsistent worldview many hold today.

We believe in Marx, Freud and Darwin.

We believe that everything is okay as long as you don’t hurt anyone, to the best of your definition of hurt and to the best of your definition of knowledge.

We believe in sex before, during and after marriage.

We believe in the therapy of sin; we believe that adultery is fun; we believe that sodomy is okay; we believe that taboos are taboo.

We believe that everything is getting better despite evidence to the contrary. The evidence must be investigated and you can prove anything with evidence.

We believe there is something in horoscopes, UFO’s and bent spoons. Jesus was a good man just like Buddha, Mohammad and ourselves. He was a good moral teacher although we think basically that his good morals were really bad.

We believe that all religions are basically the same; at least the ones we read were. They all believe in love and goodness, they only differ on matters of creation, sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation.

We believe that after death comes nothing, because when you ask the dead what happens, they say nothing. If death is not the end, and if the dead have lied then it’s compulsory heaven for all except perhaps Hitler, Stalin and Kahn.

We believe in Masters and Johnson – what’s selected is average, what’s average is normal and what’s normal is good.

We believe in total disarmament. We believe there are direct links between warfare and bloodshed. American’s should beat their guns into tractors and the Russians would be sure to follow.

We believe that man is essentially good, it’s only his behaviour that lets him down. This is the fault of society, society is the fault of conditions and conditions are the fault of society.

We believe that each man must find the truth that is right for him and reality will adapt accordingly. The universe will readjust; history will alter. We believe there is no absolute truth, except the truth that there is no absolute truth. We believe in the rejection of creeds and the flowering of individual thought.

If Chance be the Father of all flesh, disaster is His rainbow in the sky. And when you hear “State of Emergency”, “Sniper Kills Ten”, “Troops on Rampage”, “Youths Go Looting”, “Bomb Blasts School”, it is but the sound of man worshipping his maker.

Out to make a buck

My friend Jen is always telling me that  I am constantly coming up with schemes…well, here’s a new one for ya that will definitely never come to fruition.  While in Mexico City I think I was quite possibly the tallest man there.  I have never seen as much rubber necking as when I was walking down the street or riding in the subway and bus system, and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t because of my rugged good looks.  What I am sure of though was that  I was kind of like a novelty to those people.  Maybe I’ll capitalize on this by moving down to Mexico and setting up a shop that lets people get their picture taken with me for only $10 pesos.  I would even sign it!  The only reason I think this might work is because I’m that guy at the state fair that pays $2.50 to see the worlds smallest woman and the worlds largest horse…ridiculous.
